Manga Review Marathon: Otaku no Musume-san, Kodomo no Jikan, & Hourou Musuko

This past month, among other things i done between chores & work, I managed to read these three mangas. All of them. Which would summed up to 39 volumes. Add that to the pile of mangas i read offline. To not let this accomplishment goes away unnoticed, here’s a summary of all three in one blog post:

1. Otaku no Musume-san by Stu-hiro

image

Genre: Comedy, Slice of Life, Drama, Seinen, Family

Summary: basically this manga, just as the title suggest revolves around a father-daughter relationship. The stories are quite honest and relatable. Another plus side (at least for me) is that since the father works as a mangaka and also a good ol’otaku it has that Genshinken vibe. Another thing is that the characters in this manga has growth, depth but still manga-like crazy at times which added to the whole fun factor while reading it.

Final verdict: a full five stars for this one. I realize how good it is when it makes me want to reread some of its chapters again n again, which rarely happens with manga that i read online. It made me laugh and cry at some point, and by the time it ended i feel like i know all the character all too well and it was like saying goodbye to a good friend :(

2. Kodomo no Jikan by Kaworu Watashiya

image

Genre: Comedy, Ecchy, Seinen/Shonen

Summary: just like Otaku no Musume, this manga also has a father daughter relationship embedded as part of its storyline. But unlike the squicky clean relationship that Otaku no Musume and Yotsuba&! share, Kodomo no Jikan reminds me more of how the novel Lolita would be if it was ever written by an otaku. It could also easily offend people since just as Lolita this manga exploits many underage girls sexuality.

Final Verdict: undearneath all the ecchiness fortunately this manga still has a bit of heart n more backstory which can make it more endurable. A 3.0 star which makes this manga as an ok, still readable ecchi manga.

3. Hourou Musuko by Takako Shimura

image

Genre: Drama, Slice of Life, Shoujo/Shonen, Gender Bender

Summary: to be honest this is the strangest yet one of the most down to earth manga i ever red. It's not your typical gender bender manga which mostly ecchi or at least have harem situation involved. It follows the journeys of a transgendered boy n girl starting when they were naive grade schoolers untill they are mature enough to decide what they really want to be after high school.

Final Verdict: five out of five. Hands down one of the most original drama manga with a big heart and a lot of edges.
