Patlabor - the human side of mecha

OK, 1 more post for shonen manga and I promise, the next post would be a shoujo one.

https://1-media-cdn.foolz.us/ffuuka/board/m/image/1247/34/1247347519375.jpg

When talking about old mangas that had been published in Indonesia in the 90s, Patlabor is another one with a story that may still feel current even for now. Yes, it is about mecha. And yes, it is set in the future. But, different than Evangelion, or Gundam, or Maccross, all of which that was popular in Indonesia in about the same time, the slice of life kinda approach that Patlabor has makes it a lot less distant and possible than all of those other titles. I remember it first came out around my elementary school years, and the mecha is just so cool yet so believable.

At about the same time the anime was also aired in a local tv, and it one of those advantage you have as a 90s kid in Indonesia. Since it was aired in a local tv (well, we don't really have cable at that time) even for a specific kinda anime, you will have friends that also watched it and you can always discuss it at school. Even with the non or not really manga/anime lover. Compared to the condition now, most kids watched animes on cable, bootlegged cd, or online, so I guess everyone may have the different experience.

Well, let just stop there with the nostalgia and rant about how yesterday was better, and back to my Patlabor review :P

http://entresusurros.files.wordpress.com/2013/08/patlabor-av98-cockpit2.gif

Written by Yuuki Masami, what makes Patlabor different is the way that it used a realist approach rather than some in -distant-future-or-planet-sci-fi setting. And more the mechas that are being used in this manga is told to be some kind of new technology, while other settings surrounding the story more or less the same with our condition nowadays. No flying cars, teleportation, aliens, and even not much advance tech being told here. The main difference is the usage of giant robots to help traditional works, mainly police works.

Another thing that set this manga apart is the use of a female character as its lead. Noa Izumi is a tomboy, though, kind, and a bit emotional, in short, quite the normal girl-next-door. Well, the normal girl next door with a fettish for robots actually, but nothing really out of the ordinary.

Other supporting characters in this manga also suit its slice of life kinda tone in the beginning. They have different emphasized characteristics, but with an approachable atmosphere that makes them felt as if they can be real people. Other than Noa, I like the character of group leader, Captain Goto, he's the whimsy yet wise in the inside kinda character that I like. Now that I think of it, this manga is always more about the crew rather than the mechas. It even felt as if the mechas are part of the crew, and not just tools.

On other hand, its fighting scenes are still really good. Its story is still nicely fast paced in some parts, making its felt like a proper action manga, and slow paced in some parts in which it wants to focused on its drama.

It also has a reasonable length compared to mangas nowadays. In all 22 volumes, they have already defeat another advanced mecha, a bio engineered creature, uncover a child trading route and some other side arcs.

The anime spawned a bit and has more arcs compared to the manga. But it never left its realistic approach, and all the things that happened is just another part of the mobile patrol daily job.

With all the premium mangas being republished, I hope this manga get a chance to tell its stories to newer audience too.

*While doing this review, I just found out that a LIVE ACTION movie of Patlabor has just been released last month in Japan. Gotta watch it once its available here and I'll update this review with that version after.

The Solanin Mood

image

Have been listening back and forth to Solanin's soundtrack lately since I'm kinda having the 'solanin-mood'. It seems like it best suit my situation where I felt stuck in this grown-up world.
The soundtrack was done by the Asian Kung Fu Generation. Even without it being Solanin's soundtrack I might still stumble upon the song eventually since I have been listening to them since high school. It seems like their songs always have a way in summing up my feelings growing up. Listening to them always feels soothing (even though their music anything but 'soothing') and make me feels like there's somebody hugging a little piece of me in the corner. This particularly best proven by  their two Solanin soundtrack.
And yeah, Solanin itself is a manga that revolves around the pain and uncertainty of growing up. It does dramatize a bit as what most shoujo mangas do, but I could totally empathize with its main characters feelings. It is not much about crushes or love life, but more like finding a goal and meaning to our existence.
Reading this manga makes me wonder about  life itself and raised some questions such as 'What do i really want to do with life? What do i need to do in life? Should i seek for the answers?'
http://24.media.tumblr.com/7a4eadef13ba7230d04455ae91a22ba4/tumblr_mjtcsc9yvw1s00ahzo1_500.png

The best part of this manga is actually the ambiguity of its ending which i usually loathe from other mangas. The way it wrapped up the slow paced story totally suits its moral:
'life goes on. It may get suck sometimes. You may not know all the answers, but still life would goes on. And sadly life is too short to wonder too much, so just live your life to the fullest everyday.'
I cannot agree more with a manga, and it still is one my favorite manga.

Dragon Pigmario - a classic myth retelling with twists

First published in Indonesia in 1996, this 80s manga has become one of my favorite greek/rome mythology retelling.

The 9 year old me at that time (gah, this just makes me feel really old -_-) really swept away by its fairy tale like adventure. With gods and goddess, magics, adventures and love stories, for me Kurt's journey is just like the other classical fairy tale such as cinderella or jack and the beanstalk.

This manga is based loosely on the greek/roman mythology of Pygmallion, a sculpturer who fell in love with a statue he made. It follows the adventure of Kurt, a demi-god, who tries to turn his mother back to life after she was turned into stone by Medusa.

Mixing the Pygmallion myth with Hercules among other myths, Kurt is portrayed as a mortal boy with god like strength. On his journey he is accompanied by his loyal dragon friend Leon.

They meet people, fight the bad guys, make friends, fell in love, basically do all the formulaic shonen manga adventures. But still as what i have suggested earlier, this is a manga that deserve to be a classic, and at least for me its ok to be formulaic as a classic.  I do expect it to fill a certain standard afterall.

Complete with morals and good vs evil like backstory. This classic still has a twist afterall by showing at the end that balance is needed and unlike children stories, what is white is not always good and what is black does not always equal with evil.

Still after rereading it a while back after all this tale remains timeless. Just as good myths and tales do, you can tell and retell it without losing the exitement.
___________________________________________________________________________________

Kenji - the tale of a kung fu prodigy

Lately there's a lot of old mangas that are being republished by Elex Media as 'premiums'. Basically they just bundled about 1 1/2-2 volumes of mangas that were popular and has ended for quite some time. You can call it as a way of just increasing their incomes, since there's not really much difference between the old and the new one. Sure they've done some translation edit here and there, but it's still the same content. But hey, i'm not here to complain, since i'm actually liking this republishing thing. At least i can easily recollect the things i loved and lost during the Jakarta's big flood of '07. One of the most recent premium title which has just been completed is Kenji.
Seriously, this is one of the best thing i read as as a child and it still is. Republished as 12 separate volumes, Kenji follows the story of Kenji Goh a Kung Fu prodigy in his journey to find his lost grandfather in China, moreover to find the true essence of Kung Fu. What's cool about this manga is there's a lot of action and Kung fu moves that are explained in details. Unlike most mangas who usually only mention some moves, and even worse only mention the name of the moves.Since he's a kung fu prodigy those details comes along naturally without being gimmicky. Also the way that the mangaka draws his manga is quite detailed and real. Making readers feels as if they are watching a Kungfu movie and not just a manga.
The way it flows makes me want to reread the whole thing in one sitting. There's no unnecessary additional arc. Everything is in place for Kenji in order for him to grow and reach his goals. One thing that's been bothering me is just the fact that he's a member of an secret organization but that story never develops that far in order to know what will it make of him in the future. But still this manga is the perfect shonen manga which you would like your little brother or your son to read. It has a nice blend heroism, wisdom, and also it's squicky clean fun. Unlike most mangas filled with fan service nowadays. With his smart, humble, honest, and hard working attitude Kenji is the perfect role model that kids could look up to.

___________________________________________________________________________________

Q.E.D - And thus it is demonstrated

Just as many other detective manga (or manga, or detective stories in general) QED revolves around cases that are being solved by a detective and his sidekick that seems to never aged, even after 45 volumes.

But unlike any other, QED is loads  with other tricks upon its sleeves. Not just tricks which are being used in the cases, but also tricks in how the author tells its story.
I've been really impressed with how well the author crafted case after case without making me bored. And even after 45 volumes I'm still excited everytime a new volume is out.

Unlike a particular popular detective manga, without being to dramatic and unrealistic, QED always tell its stories with maintaining its calm and cool atmosphere.
Just got my hands on the new volume and the first story really struck me.  For me this is one of his best work so far, clean, simple, but full of human values.

Proofing my point earlier that this manga never stop reinventing itself, the story opened with a scene from another manga which is crucial to the backstory of the case. It didn't make sense at first but then as the story unfolds, I can't see a better way to putting it together.
                        image
(please excused the super awful pages photo and cleaning, I can't seem to find an uploaded image of the English version, thus I translate n clean it myself -_-)

It's really great how the author managed to illustrate such complex point with such a simple way. Reading, watching, hearing murder cases usually makes me feel as if the victims are so one dimensional. In the end it always felt like something is still 'unsolved' even after the case and the tricks are explained.

Well, actually not just murder cases, in many event in life people tend to forget how others have their own story, Their own life. Their own journey. And that there is no way you can know it all unless you experience every minute and every day of that people's life yourself. Which makes it totally impossible.

It's just like the fish story in David Foster Wallace's speech "This is Water". Just like this manga, his speech always keeps me in check for paying more attention to other people rather than just swim away through this life. Even more it reminds me to respect and try not to judge others easily.

Since who knows what kind of water has they swim through to reach this point?

Bellow is the link to a great short video adaptation of the speech.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Hidup mereka sendiri. Pengalaman mereka sendiri.

Moving Out Manga Related Content from My Tumblr Page

Well, haven't really write anything new in this blog for years. Yet I still posted stuff and reviews about mangas from time to time in my tumblr page, macchamochi.tumblr.com. Since my mangas review there is quite jumbled up with other random stuff, I think it would be better to move them (well to copied actually) them here. Just to make it all a bit more organized for me. In the future I will posts my manga reviews here first, and then reblogged it to my tumblr page rather than the other way around. And yeah, since my tumblr is being written in English, I will also posting stuff in English here -_-. I already posted my latest blog in tumblr here. And will move a post here each day while also trying to write new ones.

Manga Review Marathon: Otaku no Musume-san, Kodomo no Jikan, & Hourou Musuko

This past month, among other things i done between chores & work, I managed to read these three mangas. All of them. Which would summed up to 39 volumes. Add that to the pile of mangas i read offline. To not let this accomplishment goes away unnoticed, here’s a summary of all three in one blog post:

1. Otaku no Musume-san by Stu-hiro

image

Genre: Comedy, Slice of Life, Drama, Seinen, Family

Summary: basically this manga, just as the title suggest revolves around a father-daughter relationship. The stories are quite honest and relatable. Another plus side (at least for me) is that since the father works as a mangaka and also a good ol’otaku it has that Genshinken vibe. Another thing is that the characters in this manga has growth, depth but still manga-like crazy at times which added to the whole fun factor while reading it.

image

Final verdict: a full five stars for this one. I realize how good it is when it makes me want to reread some of its chapters again n again, which rarely happens with manga that i read online. It made me laugh and cry at some point, and by the time it ended i feel like i know all the character all too well and it was like saying goodbye to a good friend :(

2. Kodomo no Jikan by Kaworu Watashiya

image

Genre: Comedy, Ecchy, Seinen/Shonen

Summary: just like Otaku no Musume, this manga also has a father daughter relationship embedded as part of its storyline. But unlike the squicky clean relationship that Otaku no Musume and Yotsuba&! share, Kodomo no Jikan reminds me more of how the novel Lolita would be if it was ever written by an otaku. It could also easily offend people since just as Lolita this manga exploits many underage girls sexuality.

image

Final Verdict: undearneath all the ecchiness fortunately this manga still has a bit of heart n more backstory which can make it more endurable. A 3.0 star which makes this manga as an ok, still readable ecchi manga.

3. Hourou Musuko by Takako Shimura

image

Genre: Drama, Slice of Life, Shoujo/Shonen, Gender Bender

Summary: to be honest this is the strangest yet one of the most down to earth manga i ever red. It's not your typical gender bender manga which mostly ecchi or at least have harem situation involved. It follows the journeys of a transgendered boy n girl starting when they were naive grade schoolers untill they are mature enough to decide what they really want to be after high school.

image

Final Verdict: five out of five. Hands down one of the most original drama manga with a big heart and a lot of edges.
